FLEXIBLE WORKING HOURS : THEORY AND PRACTICE

Provides a detailed examination of some of the main theoretical questions to be resolved when designing a flexible hours scheme. That is, a pattern of working in which operating hours are divided into coretime, when employees must be at work, and a band of hours around this when employees have an element of discretion on whether to be at work.

In addition to illustrating the relationship between the latter, this publication also examines the accounting period over which employee hours have to be worked. In particular alternative methods of providing ´carryover’ between successive accounting periods. It also looks at the monitoring process required, and some of the modifications, or clarifications, that may be necessary in respect of terms and conditions of employment. Finally, since it is unwise to separate theory from practice, an example of a flexible working hours agreement is provided.
