ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF CALCULATING SHIFT PREMIA
This publication examines the main features of the various alternative ways that have been devised to calculate shift premia. That is, the additional compensation for hours included in the normal pattern of work that are viewed as unsocial since they fall outside the hours covered by the traditional day shift.
The methods illustrated here range from the universal (i.e. those that cover all patterns of working time) to the specific. (i.e. ´one off ‘ arrangements for a particular pattern of working) Fully worked examples of the main alternatives showing their application to different types of shift rota are provided. Also provided is a brief outline of some of their main advantages and disadvantages.
