A REPORT ON THE RöSSING JOB EVALUATION SCHEME AND SALARY STRUCTURE

A report prepared for the Mineworkers Union of Namibia. The dispute centred on the job evaluation scheme used by Rössing Uranium Ltd. In particular the schemes, and the salary structure based upon it, vulnerability to the taint of discrimination. Race discrimination in particular.

The report identifies several areas where both are characterised by race and gender imbalances. Not only were white males disproportionately represented in the top grades, but also there are separate pay curves by race. The report recommends both immediate and longer term changes in job evaluation practice. Including a revision of the participative structure, and the implementation of policies and monitoring systems aimed at ensuring that race and gender discrimination are minimized.
