30 FOUR TEAM, MIXED TWO (12HR) AND THREE (8HR) SHIFTS A DAY, SEVEN DAY ROTAS

The purpose of this publication is to provide shift work practitioners with a comprehensive reference work illustrating the main rotas of this type. That is rotas providing 24hrs cover a day, seven days a week, for 365 days a year, with four teams of employees working a mixture of three (8hr) and two (12hr) shifts a day. It contains 30 fully illustrated examples of basic rotas of this type that operate throughout the year. All the illustrative rotas generate cover for twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week, for 365 days. Thus, the rotas provide continuous cover for 168hrs a week, and given no overlaps between successive shifts plus paid meal breaks, the average rostered week is 42hrs. The examples in this publication show rotas in which three (8hr) shifts are worked on each weekday, and two (12hr) shifts at weekends.

The objective is to increase the amount of weekend time off relative to a pure three (8hr) shift a day system. By definition all the illustrative examples contain a mixture of three and two shift a day working. Within blocks of shifts there is a complex pattern of rotation. Not only do the rotas often contain a mixture of 8hr and 12hr shifts, but also the direction of rotation frequently varies from one block to the next. Thus it is not uncommon, within the same shift rota, to find some combination of no rotation within blocks of shifts, forward rotation within blocks of shifts, a semi-backward rotation within blocks of shifts, and a backward rotation within blocks of shifts.
