Two main meanings:

  • Discontinuous rotas. Patterns of work where start and finish times for each team, are staggered to give a gradual build up of the number of people present during a shift. For example: Public transport.
  • Continuous rotas. Patterns of work where start and finish times are staggered to avoid all employees changing shift at the same time. For example: To ensure a smooth handover, Team leaders / Supervisors starting 1hr before the rest of their team.
